Popular country artist Kenny Chesney released a song in 2007 titled “Don’t Blink.” The song tells the story of a man turning 100 years old who is interviewed by a local news reporter. When asked, “What’s the secret to life?” the man simply replies, “All I can say is… don’t blink.”
Every January, many of us find ourselves saying the same thing: Where did the time go? It’s hard to believe we are now in the year 2026. One thing all humanity shares is the same gift of time. And many have wisely observed that time may be one of life’s most valuable commodities.
We often hear the illustration at funerals about the birth date and death date on a tombstone, and how the most important part is the dash in between — representing how we lived our lives. What truly matters is what we do with the days God has given us.
This past year, we have intentionally emphasized our mission statement:“Lost and broken people matter to God. Lost and broken people matter to us.” God stirred my heart to highlight this focus under the theme “What Matters Most.” I believe much of success in life comes down to what we choose to emphasize. What we focus on shapes what we become.
As we reflect on the past year across the Southern California District, we celebrate so much that truly matters. The Advent season, in particular, revealed the heart of our churches, pastors, and leaders. So many congregations intentionally pointed their communities to the truth that God is with us. Through outreach programs, Christmas services, and acts of compassion, our churches both strengthened believers and invited the community to encounter the true meaning of Christmas.
Sherri and I were invited to participate in one such outreach with El Cajon New Life Church and Pastor Isaac Gilmore. On a Sunday evening, we witnessed what it looks like to be the hands and feet of Jesus. Over 100 people from the community were served a free meal, and children in need received gifts. El Cajon New Life and Haitian New Life partnered together to extend love and hope. That is “what matters most.”
I am deeply grateful for the many faithful servants across the Southern California Nazarene District. I continually encounter pastors, leaders, and church members who are serving Christ with excellence in one of the most dynamic mission fields in the nation. You are making a difference. Thank you for your faithfulness.
As we look toward 2026 and beyond, I encourage us to continue focusing on what matters most. Yes, we should grow in our weaknesses—but we must also lean into our strengths. God has uniquely gifted each church and each person for effective ministry. When we faithfully operate in those strengths, I believe God will bring a harvest.
Sherri and I send you our love, prayers, and unwavering support. Please continue reaching out and letting us know how we at the district office can serve you and your ministry. God has entrusted us with this moment in time. Let us not blink. Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus as He leads us forward. I truly believe the best is yet to come.
We love you and are praying for you.
